We spent some time with Peter hearing his growth story and the impact that Mygrow has had on his life. The following is what he had to say, shared with his permission.
This is a story of how Mygrow challenged us to embrace our own ethos as an adventure camp and get out of our comfort zones…
The phrase “customer is king” perfectly summarises what it means to be in the hospitality industry.
We often spend significant amounts of time, money and energy emphasising the importance of keeping the client happy, but I have found over the years we haven’t focussed on developing the skills to actually do so.
That is until we started Mygrow.
I am sure others can relate when I say that keeping clients happy is at times a difficult task and doesn’t always come naturally.
We host adventure and leadership development camps and the main purpose is to offer an adventurous and “out of your comfort zone” experience that leaves the client enriched and invigorated.
We know it is impossible to please every client but it is hard to not take a client’s critique very personally. The moment I truly started seeing the worth of Mygrow in our team was when we had a particularly tricky situation.
After the first meal the client voiced her disappointment with the quality of the food we had served. To tell you the truth, as we focus on making it an adventurous experience, previously my natural first reaction would have been to think that the client should have paid more if they wanted a more lavish menu. Adventurous means nutritious but not luxurious you know!
“Before Mygrow I would have held onto that attitude and it would have set the tone for a frustrating week of a grumbling client and grumbling host. It would have been days of suppressing frustration and passive aggression.”
But not anymore! Thanks to Mygrow, we embraced the true heart of adventure and adapted to the needs in front of us. The team and I put our heads together and thought of creative ways to use the resources we had to present a more diverse menu. We invited the client to assess the different meal options and were able to present a more acceptable menu for the rest of the week.
Our team now looks at people differently. The skills we have learnt on Mygrow, such as flexibility, inviting feedback and empathy, mean we have fundamentally changed the way we interact with clients and each other. This means our service has gone beyond simply putting up a professional face for a client. We now genuinely want to help and serve.
We love developing leadership skills in people through roughing it out in the field and teaching the youth of today to enjoy the outdoors. Mygrow totally fits in with this passion, because it encourages you to venture into the unknown within.
It takes courage to step into your inner world and change.
It takes courage to face the man in the mirror.
It takes courage to do things differently.
But like most adventures, I can testify that it is worth the risk!
